Reading for Pleasure

Linchfield Academy

At Linchfield we are proud of our Reading for Pleasure Culture.

We were delighted to achieve the Lincolnshire Reading Pledge Silver Award recently.

The Lincolnshire Reading Pledge, created by Witham St Hugh’s English Hub and L.E.A.D. Teaching School Hub in collaboration with Professor Teresa Cremin (Reading for Pleasure & The Open University), champions the joy and importance of reading.

At Linchfield, we believe that reading for pleasure can transform lives. The pledge aims to ensure every child – whatever their background, needs, or abilities – becomes a confident, fluent, and enthusiastic reader.

Earning this award was a true team effort. A huge thank you must go to parents and carers for supporting our children with initiatives such as the Summer Reading Challenge and World Book Day.

We’re excited to continue our Reading Pledge journey this year as we set our sights on Gold!

Reading Ambassadors

A special shout-out goes to our incredible Reading Ambassadors, who are really keen to promote a love of reading both in school and across our local community. They are currently thoroughly enjoying sharing books with our EYFS children at break times. Last This year they were delighted to become part of the Shadowing group for the Carnegie Greenaway Awards and are looking forward to taking part again this year.

Our Y6 Reading Ambassadors run an amazing lunchtime reading club for children from Y3/4.
We have already enjoyed many fantastic virtual author events this year, including one with the inspiring local author Hannah Gold and Michael Rosen’s very entertaining Poetry Party.

We had a fantastic time in March, when award winning poet Valerie Bloom , came to our school and we all joined in with her amazing perfomance poetry workshops. Valerie has an MBE for her services to poetry and has won many awards including the Smarties award for her children’s book Fruits.

We are also very much looking forward to sharing our book recommendations and our love of reading with the children at the Jofi School in Gambia, following our successful story session with them last year.

Linchfield Staff Book Club

Recently, the Book Club met to discuss the author, Piers Torday. Piers Torday is an award-winning author and best-selling children’s author. Many of his books are longer chapter books, featuring strong characters on a gripping adventure with a great many cliff hangers making you want to continue reading. More recently, he has written a lyrical tale called ‘According to Owl and Dog’ (due to be released in October in 2026) where Girl and her loyal companion Dog take a magical journey to discover books and the joys of reading!
Linchfield Book Club recommends these books to boys and girls in Year 6 and confident readers in Year 5. These books would be a great read for those that love adventure stories, especially those that take place in other worlds. Please ask Mrs Bates if you have any questions. Happy reading!
